Medicare 2027 - Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about 2027 Medicare plan changes in Maryland.

What are the key Medicare plan changes coming in 2027 in Maryland?

Maryland is experiencing significant Medicare Advantage Plan changes in 2027. Every Maryland county will have at least one plan termination, affecting more than 21,000 beneficiaries who must select new coverage by December 31, 2026, or face a gap in comprehensive coverage.

Humana is terminating the highest number of plans statewide, affecting approximately 16,000 members. Regional carriers are also issuing terminations: CareFirst is dropping 4,000 members, Johns Hopkins is terminating coverage for 1,600 members, and Alterwood Health is discontinuing plans for 430 members.

What are my options if my Maryland Medicare Advantage Plan is terminating?

If you are among the 21,000 beneficiaries losing your Medicare Advantage Plan in 2027, you have several options.

Option 1: Select a New Medicare Advantage Plan
Review available plans in your county and enroll in a replacement Medicare Advantage Plan before December 31, 2026. We recommend booking a call with us to discuss which plan you're losing and explore comparable replacements.

Option 2: Switch to a Medicare Supplement Plan
Your termination letter is your "golden ticket" to moving to a Medigap Supplement Plan without health questions or underwriting. Since you're being involuntarily disenrolled, your approval is guaranteed. While Supplement Plans cost more monthly than Advantage Plans, they offer significant benefits worth considering, including no network restrictions and predictable costs.

Option 3: Remain on Original Medicare
You can continue with Original Medicare Parts A and B, though this option provides less comprehensive coverage than Advantage or Supplement Plans.

Important Warning: Protect Yourself from Scams
Scam artists target areas where plans are terminating. Never give your Medicare ID, date of birth, or personal information to unsolicited callers. All legitimate, licensed Medicare brokers must have your permission to contact you. If you choose not to work with us, select a local, licensed broker who understands these changes and your options.

What are the 2027 Medicare costs and rates?

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sets certain Medicare costs nationally. Here is what we know about 2027:

CMS-Set Costs (Subject to Minor Changes)

  • Part B Monthly Premium: $209.50 (up from $202.90 in 2026)
  • Part B Annual Deductible: $310 (up from $283 in 2026)
  • Part D Annual Deductible: $700 (up from $615 in 2026)
  • Part D Maximum Out-of-Pocket: $2,400 (up from $2,100 in 2026)

Medicare Supplement Plan Costs
Medigap premiums are expected to increase 8-15% in 2027 due to higher utilization among policyholders. This upward trend has continued since 2024, though experts expect increases to moderate in coming years. In 2026, some carriers increased Plan G and Plan F premiums by more than 20%.

Medicare Advantage Plan Costs
Maryland may see slight upward premium movement in 2027 due to rising costs and carrier pressures. However, some carriers are choosing to reduce benefits rather than increase premiums, lowering frequency and amounts of covered services. Others are raising premiums while reducing or eliminating select benefits that were once standard in their plans.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug) Changes
Part D rules remain the same whether you're on a Supplement or Advantage Plan. The deductible rises to $700 and the maximum out-of-pocket increases to $2,400. A significant change: the current administration has terminated Part D subsidy extensions to insurance carriers. Seniors will bear the brunt of this nearly $13 per month subsidy loss, so expect Part D premiums to increase in 2027.

What options do I have to change my plan?

There are multiple plan change opportunities throughout the year. The most widely used is the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) which occurs from October 15th to December 7th each year.

Annual Enrollment Period

October 15 through December 7

  • Known as "AEP"
  • You can add, change, drop Advantage Plans
  • You can add, change, drop Rx Drug Plans
  • Sometimes referred to as "Open Enrollment" but this can cause confusion and misinformation

NOTE: See TV commercials promising unlimited benefits for free?  These are massive call centers with limited plan options. CMS (Medicare) received so many complaints about these companies that CMS had to implement new marketing rules. Never give your Medicare ID to anyone that you didn't ask to call you. They can change your plan without your permission.  Get a broker's State license first, ask for referrals, ask to see their website.  Call us, and we'll tell you if it's a scam or not.

MA OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD

January 1 through March 31

  • Known as the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period
  • You can change or drop Advantage Plans
  • You can return to Original Medicare
  • Medicare (CMS) does not allow any company or broker to actively promote or advertise this time period, so please take note of this information

NOTE: You cannot join an Advantage Plan during this time period unless you already have one in place, unless you qualify for an IEP or a different SEP. You cannot change an Rx Drug Plan during this time. If you have an Advantage Plan, and you add an Rx Drug Plan during this time, your Advantage Plan will automatically be terminated. Call us for details.

INITIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD

All Year - Varies By Person

  • Known as "IEP"
  • This is when you first become eligible for Medicare, which for most is at age 65
  • It is a 7 month window, 3 months prior to, and 3 months after your 65th birth month
  • If you have a permanent disability and get SSA benefits, your IEP is 3 months before your 25th month of SSA benefits, and ends 3 months after your 25th month. Those on SSA disability will get a second IEP when they turn 65

SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD

All Year - Varies By Person & Situation

  • Known as an "SEP"
  • These are small windows of time, typically 63 days for most situations that you can make changes
  • You can add, change, drop Advantage Plans
  • You can add, change, drop Rx Drug Plans
  • You can add, change, drop a Supplement Plan
  • There are dozens of SEP designations with varying degrees of rules, and these rules vary by state. It's best to discuss your situation with a broker prior to making any changes. The broker should be an expert in your state, or better yet, live in the state to help you better understand all of your options. Time is of the essence, don't wait to speak to someone or you might miss your only window to make a much needed change.

MEDICAID / INCOME BASED

All Year - Varies By Person & Situation

  • Known as an "SEP"
  • Is triggered by your income
  • Can be triggered by an individual making less than $45,000 through Maryland's SPDAP option

  • You can add, change, drop Rx Drug Plans
  • QMB & FBDE recipients have access to additional Advantage Plans throughout Maryland
  • Various rules apply, please contact us for details
  • Here are some various Medicare income rates >

SUPPLEMENT PLAN ENROLLMENT

All Year - Varies By Person & Situation

  • Known as "Medigap" or "Gap" Plans
  • You can add, change or drop a Medicare Supplement Plan 365 days a year
  • Popular options are F, G, N or high deductible options. Those >65 only have the Plan A option.
  • Unless you are in your IEP or a specific SEP, you will need to answer health questions to qualify for a plan, and your application can be denied
  • Rates vary by state, age, sex, and possibly health (those with preexisting conditions may be "rated up" to a higher premium level or denied completely). Call for details about which conditions may trigger higher rates.
  • Plan enrollments or changes can start on the 1st day of the following month of the application date.
