What Is Medicare in Maryland?

While Medicare is a Federal based insurance plan managed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), the program is available in Maryland to all eligible residents.  To be elegible, you must either be 65 years of age, have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) at any age, have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) at any age, or be permanently disabled at any age and fulfill a two year waiting period.

After qualifying, you'd receive Medicare Part A (Hospital benefits) and Medicare Part B (Medical benefits). Costs for both Medicare A & B vary by how many quarters you worked as a US citizen, as well as your income. This program is facilitated by the Social Security Administration and all applications to obtain Medicare A & B are processed through them.

Medicare Parts Explained for Maryland Residents

There are two main parts of Mediare you purchase directly from the government:  Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.  We'll review which both Parts cover (and do not cover).

Part A:  Hospital Benefits

Medicare Part A is essentially your Hospital benefits, which includes your room & board, nursing while in-patient, hospice, skilled nursing facility care and limited home health care.  As long as you are a US Citizen and have paid into the Medicare tax system at least 40 Quarters, there would be no charge for you to obtain Medicare Part A. Without proper credits, your costs for Medicare Part A can reach upwards of $600 per month.

Part B: Medical Benefits

Medicare Part B typically pays for outpatient care such as doctor's visits, urgent care, durable medical equipment and necessary medical services considered outpatient.  Medicare Part B pays up to 80% of the Medicare costs, and you are liable for the remaining 20% of all costs after you pay off the annual Medicare Part B deductible.
